Apple Notes Workout Template: Free Copy-Paste Workout Log

Copy this free Apple Notes workout template for strength, cardio, mobility, or PT. Log sets fast, organize notes, and text completed workouts to BodyBuddy.

Apple Notes Workout Template: Free Copy-Paste Workout Log

This free Apple Notes workout template gives you a fast way to record exercises, sets, reps, weight, duration, and notes without navigating a dedicated workout tracker.
You do not need dropdowns, an exercise database, or a perfect tracking system to start. Copy one of the free templates below, keep a master copy pinned in Notes, and fill in your actual numbers as you train.
When the workout is over, you can also text the completed note to BodyBuddy. BodyBuddy can turn the plain text into a structured workout record and use that context during daily accountability check-ins.

Free Apple Notes workout template

Copy this flexible template into a new Apple Note:
WORKOUT LOG — [DATE] Session: [WORKOUT NAME] Plan/source: [SELF / COACH / TRAINER / PT / PROGRAM] Completed: [FULL / MODIFIED / PARTIAL] Duration: [MINUTES] [EXERCISE 1] Set 1: [WEIGHT + UNIT] x [REPS] Set 2: [WEIGHT + UNIT] x [REPS] Set 3: [WEIGHT + UNIT] x [REPS] Effort: [RPE / EASY / MODERATE / HARD] Notes: [FORM CUE, MODIFICATION, OR ANYTHING TO REMEMBER] [EXERCISE 2] Set 1: Set 2: Set 3: Effort: Notes: [EXERCISE 3] Set 1: Set 2: Set 3: Effort: Notes: Overall notes: [ENERGY, EQUIPMENT CHANGES, SYMPTOMS, OR CONTEXT] Next time: [ONE THING TO REPEAT OR DISCUSS] #workout
Delete any fields you do not use. A shorter log you complete consistently is more useful than a perfect template you abandon.

A minimal workout note for busy days

If detailed logging feels like homework, use this:
COMPLETED WORKOUT — [DATE] Workout: [NAME] Duration: [MINUTES] [EXERCISE]: [RESULT] [EXERCISE]: [RESULT] [EXERCISE]: [RESULT] Effort: [1–10] Notes: Next time: #workout
Example:
COMPLETED WORKOUT — AUG 11 Workout: Core Duration: 22 min Crunches: 3x20 Bicycle kicks: 3x20 Leg raises: 3x20 Effort: 7/10 Notes: controlled pace, no skipped sets Next time: repeat this session #workout

A detailed strength-training template

Use this version when individual set performance matters:
STRENGTH WORKOUT — [DATE] Session: Duration: [EXERCISE] Warm-up: 1: 2: 3: RPE: Notes: [EXERCISE] Warm-up: 1: 2: 3: RPE: Notes: Session notes: Next-session target: #workout #strength
Filled example:
STRENGTH WORKOUT — AUG 11 Session: Upper A Duration: 48 min Bench press Warm-up: 45 lb x 12 1: 135 lb x 8 2: 135 lb x 8 3: 135 lb x 7 RPE: 9 Notes: last rep slowed down One-arm row 1: 45 lb x 10/side 2: 45 lb x 10/side 3: 45 lb x 10/side RPE: 8 Notes: controlled Session notes: good energy Next-session target: aim for 8/8/8 on bench #workout #strength

A cardio or interval template

CARDIO WORKOUT — [DATE] Activity: Distance: Total duration: Average pace: [OPTIONAL] Intervals: [ROUND / DISTANCE / TIME / RECOVERY] Effort: Conditions: Notes: Next time: #workout #cardio
Example:
CARDIO WORKOUT — AUG 11 Activity: Outdoor run Distance: 5 km Total duration: 29:40 Intervals: continuous easy run Effort: 6/10 Conditions: warm and humid Notes: pace felt steady Next time: repeat the route #workout #running

A template for a trainer or physical therapist's instructions

This version keeps the professional's instructions separate from what you actually completed:
COACH / PT SESSION — [DATE] Professional or program: Session name: [EXERCISE OR DRILL] Prescribed: Completed: Response during or after: Question for next appointment: [EXERCISE OR DRILL] Prescribed: Completed: Response during or after: Question for next appointment: Modifications made: Follow-up questions: #workout
Copy the professional's wording accurately. This is a record of their instructions and your completed work—not a reason to change prescribed exercises, loads, restrictions, or rehabilitation progressions yourself.
If you received a full future program rather than logging one completed session, use the separate guide to import a trainer, PT, or workout plan into the BodyBuddy app.
If a trainer already built your routine and the hard part is carrying it out between sessions, read How to Follow Your Personal Trainer's Workout Plan Between Sessions.

PPL, upper/lower, and full-body note layouts

These are blank logging shells for a program you already follow—not exercise prescriptions. Replace each placeholder with the movements and targets from your own program, trainer, or physical therapist.

Push/pull/legs (PPL) workout note

PPL WORKOUT — [DATE] Day: [PUSH / PULL / LEGS] Duration: [EXERCISE]: [SETS / REPS / LOAD] [EXERCISE]: [SETS / REPS / LOAD] [EXERCISE]: [SETS / REPS / LOAD] Effort: Notes: Next time: #workout #ppl

Upper/lower workout note

UPPER / LOWER — [DATE] Day: [UPPER / LOWER] Duration: [EXERCISE]: [SETS / REPS / LOAD] [EXERCISE]: [SETS / REPS / LOAD] [EXERCISE]: [SETS / REPS / LOAD] Effort: Notes: Next time: #workout #upper-lower

Full-body workout note

FULL-BODY WORKOUT — [DATE] Duration: [EXERCISE]: [SETS / REPS / LOAD] [EXERCISE]: [SETS / REPS / LOAD] [EXERCISE]: [SETS / REPS / LOAD] Effort: Notes: Next time: #workout #full-body

Set up the template in Apple Notes

1. Create a master note

Create a new note and make its first line something unmistakable, such as:
WORKOUT TEMPLATE — COPY THIS
Apple uses the first line as the note title, so the master is easy to find.

2. Pin the master note

Return to the notes list, touch and hold the template, then choose Pin Note. You can also swipe right on the note and tap the pin.
The template will stay near the top instead of disappearing into your archive.

3. Copy it into a fresh note before each workout

Select the template text, tap Copy, create a new note, and paste it. Replace the title with the date and workout name:
2026-08-11 — Upper Body
Using one note per session preserves your history. Do not overwrite last week's results with this week's numbers.

4. Add a workout tag

Keep #workout at the bottom of every note. Optional tags can separate training types:
#strength #running #mobility #physical-therapy
Apple Notes can search typed text and tags, so consistent exercise names make old sessions easier to find. Apple also supports headings, checklists, tables, and collapsible sections if you want to customize the layout. See Apple's current Notes formatting guide and tag organization guide.

The fastest way to write sets and reps

You do not have to type every set on a separate line. Plain shorthand is faster when its meaning stays clear.
What happened
Write this
Three identical sets
Squat: 80 kg 3x5
Same load, different reps
Bench press: 135 lb x 8, 8, 7
Bodyweight sets
Push-ups: 20, 18, 15 reps
Timed movement
Plank: 3 x 45 sec
Distance workout
Run: 5 km in 29:40
Intervals
Bike: 6 rounds — 1 min hard / 2 min easy
One-sided exercise
Split squat: 25 lb x 10/side x 3
Modified session
Stopped after set 2; note for coach below
Put the weight before the set notation and include lb or kg. A line such as 3x10x40 forces you—and any software reading it—to guess which number is the load.

Turn a completed Apple Note into a BodyBuddy workout log

Apple Notes handles quick capture well. BodyBuddy can add structure and follow-through without making you enter every set again.
After the workout:
  1. Update the note with what you actually completed.
  1. Begin the copied text with Completed workout today: so it is clearly a finished session rather than a future plan.
  1. Select the filled-in section and tap Copy.
  1. Paste it into your text-message conversation with BodyBuddy.
  1. Send it as normal.
  1. Review the saved workout details in the BodyBuddy app.
For example:
Completed workout today: Upper body Bench press: 135 lb x 8, 8, 7 One-arm row: 45 lb 3x10/side Push-ups: 20, 16, 12 Duration: 42 min Effort: RPE 8
Watch a completed Apple Notes-style workout become a structured BodyBuddy workout receipt.
Depending on the activity and the details you provide, BodyBuddy can structure strength sessions, running, cycling, swimming, circuits, mobility, yoga, classes, and sports drills. A saved workout can include exercises, sets, duration or distance, notes, muscle groups, and progress across comparable sessions when enough history exists.
A completed plain-text workout becomes a structured BodyBuddy workout receipt

Clear exercise names and units produce a cleaner record. Always review the extracted details: shorthand can be ambiguous, and BodyBuddy should organize the workout you reported rather than invent missing sets, reps, weights, or distances.
Because the workout joins the same coaching history, BodyBuddy can use it in later conversations alongside meals, sleep, recovery, and upcoming commitments. Start talking with BodyBuddy when you want the note to become part of that larger follow-through loop.

Completed workout or future workout plan?

These are two different workflows:
  • You already did the workout: text the completed note to BodyBuddy so it can become a workout log.
  • This is a future program from a trainer, PT, or another source: import it through Plans in the BodyBuddy app so the instructions remain available for future coaching.
Adding Completed workout today: or This is my plan for next week: removes the guesswork.

Where Apple Notes works well—and where it stops

Apple Notes is flexible, searchable, and already installed on the iPhone. That makes it a strong capture layer for people who dislike navigating forms between sets.
Its limits are just as important:
  • It stores what you type, but it is not a workout-specific database.
  • Apple's current Notes documentation does not describe automatic exercise history, training-volume calculations, or progressive-overload charts.
  • A long archive still requires consistent naming and manual review.
  • A checked-off exercise does not preserve the load and reps unless you type them.
  • It will not proactively text you when a planned workout keeps slipping.
That does not make Apple Notes a bad workout tracker. For many people, the useful combination is simple:
  • Apple Notes for frictionless writing during the session
  • BodyBuddy for structured records and daily accountability afterward

Frequently asked questions

Does Apple Notes have a built-in workout template?

Apple's current Notes documentation does not list a workout-specific template. You can create a reusable master note with headings, checklists, tables, and tags, then pin it for quick access.

Can Apple Notes track workouts?

Yes. It works well for plain-text exercises, sets, reps, weight, distance, duration, effort, and notes. It is best treated as a flexible workout journal rather than a specialized training database.

How do I reuse an Apple Notes workout template?

Pin a master template, copy its text, and paste it into a new note before each workout. Give every completed session its own dated note so you do not erase earlier results.

Should I use one long workout note or one note per session?

One note per session is easier to search, preserves chronological history, and avoids accidental overwriting. Keep one separate pinned note as the reusable template.

Can BodyBuddy read workout shorthand?

BodyBuddy is designed to structure clear shorthand such as 40 kg 3x10, 135 lb x 8, 8, 7, 5 km in 29:40, or 3 x 45 sec. Include exercise names and units, label the text as a completed workout, and review the saved details.

Does BodyBuddy replace my trainer or physical therapist?

No. BodyBuddy can organize what you completed and help you follow through between sessions. It does not replace professional programming, form assessment, injury evaluation, or changes to prescribed rehabilitation instructions.
