How to Transfer ChatGPT or Claude Health Context to the BodyBuddy App
Use a prompt-and-paste handoff to review and transfer selected health context from ChatGPT or Claude into the BodyBuddy app—without linking accounts.

If you have spent months talking to ChatGPT or Claude about your health, a new coach begins with a disadvantage. The useful context—why early workouts keep failing, which meals keep you full, an old injury that changes how you train, or the kind of accountability that makes you disengage—does not automatically follow you.
The BodyBuddy app offers a manual handoff. It gives your previous assistant a structured prompt, lets you review the response, and transfers only the text you choose to paste back. There is no account linking and no automatic sync.
If you are trying to transfer ChatGPT memory to a health coach, that review-first workflow is more useful than dumping an entire chat history. It gives BodyBuddy, your coach, a concise starting point while keeping you in control of what crosses over.
Disclosure: This guide was written by the creators of BodyBuddy. It describes the current onboarding handoff in the BodyBuddy app.
What this handoff does—and does not do
The handoff is a prompt-and-paste workflow:
- The BodyBuddy app copies a structured handoff prompt.
- You run that prompt in ChatGPT or Claude.
- You read and edit the response.
- You paste the version you approve into the BodyBuddy app.
- The app organizes the selected context for onboarding and coaching.
It does not connect the BodyBuddy app to your ChatGPT or Claude account. The app cannot browse the rest of your conversations, and future conversations do not sync automatically.
“Memory” also does not mean a complete export. The source assistant can only work from the context available under your settings. Its response may omit details, repeat stale information, or state something too confidently. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ and Claude’s memory guide explain the current controls in each product.
How to transfer ChatGPT or Claude health context
1. Choose your previous assistant
During onboarding, open Give me a head start.
Choose Import ChatGPT memory or Import Claude memory. The BodyBuddy app prepares the same kind of structured coaching handoff for either source.

2. Copy the prompt and open the assistant
Tap Copy the prompt & open ChatGPT or Copy the prompt & open Claude.
The prompt is copied before the other assistant opens. If it is not already filled in, paste it into a new conversation yourself.
The prompt asks the assistant to produce a concise handoff built around:
- current goals;
- recurring habits and constraints;
- food, movement, sleep, and mindset patterns;
- injuries or health conditions you previously discussed;
- professionals or other people involved in your routine;
- dated body weights you reported as facts;
- active or unresolved threads; and
- coaching approaches that tend to help or make you disengage.
The point is not to reconstruct every conversation. It is to explain what you are trying to do now, what has already been learned, and where the next coach should begin.

3. Review the response before sharing it
Read the entire briefing in ChatGPT or Claude before returning to the BodyBuddy app.
Check for:
- goals that are no longer current;
- injuries or health details described incorrectly;
- stale medications, routines, measurements, or schedules;
- inferred information presented as fact;
- private information about somebody else; and
- duplicated threads that can be shortened.
Delete anything you do not want to transfer. Correct unclear dates and measurements. If an important claim came from a doctor, physical therapist, dietitian, or another professional, compare it with the original instruction instead of trusting the assistant’s summary.
A short briefing you reviewed is more useful than a comprehensive briefing you did not.
4. Paste the version you approved
Return to the BodyBuddy app, paste the edited response into the handoff field, and tap Add.
The app reads the text and shows a receipt titled Here’s what I picked up. Depending on what the briefing contains, the receipt may include:
- your usual sleep schedule;
- activities you enjoy;
- current goals;
- injuries or health notes;
- people on your health team;
- historical weigh-ins;
- relevant backstory; and
- threads for BodyBuddy to confirm with you over time.
If the briefing contains actionable, non-sensitive threads, the BodyBuddy app can also create a ChatGPT Handoff or Claude Handoff plan for BodyBuddy to use as coaching context. That happens only when qualifying threads exist. It is different from importing a specific document or program through Plans.

The screenshots in this guide use fictional demo data.
5. Confirm the details as onboarding continues
Some imported details prefill later onboarding questions. Review and edit those answers as you move through the normal flow.
Historical weights behave differently. Clearly dated past weigh-ins may be added to your weight chart when the handoff is processed. Check those entries immediately rather than assuming every number and date was interpreted correctly.
The receipt shows what the app extracted. It does not prove the source assistant’s claims were correct.
What happens to the text after you tap Add
The manual review step gives you control over what you submit, but this is not an on-device-only workflow.
When you tap Add, the pasted briefing leaves your device and is sent to BodyBuddy’s systems. The BodyBuddy app uses third-party AI providers to process messages and data. The current BodyBuddy Privacy Policy names providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
The handoff text and its structured extraction are stored so BodyBuddy can use the context while coaching you. Do not submit anything you are uncomfortable storing or having processed by those providers.
Before importing health context:
- include only information about yourself;
- keep another person’s details to the minimum needed to explain your routine;
- remove diagnoses, medications, or measurements you do not want to transfer;
- preserve uncertainty instead of turning it into a confident statement; and
- verify important professional instructions against their original source.
BodyBuddy can organize context and help with follow-through. BodyBuddy cannot verify a diagnosis, validate a medication instruction, or replace professional advice.
Memory handoff vs importing a specific plan
These are two different features.
ChatGPT or Claude handoff | Specific-plan import | |
Best for | Broad personal context gathered across conversations | One defined document or set of instructions |
Where it begins | Give me a head start during onboarding | Plans → Add a plan |
Input | A reviewed response pasted from ChatGPT or Claude | Pasted text, photo, PDF, CSV, XLS, or XLSX |
Result | Prefilled onboarding context and, when actionable threads exist, a handoff plan BodyBuddy can use | A plan you can review and manage under Plans |
Account connection | None | None |
Use the handoff when the useful information is spread across prior AI conversations.
Use Plan Import when you already have a specific doctor’s summary, physical therapist’s protocol, dietitian’s plan, trainer’s spreadsheet, or written program. See How to Import a Doctor, PT, Dietitian, or Workout Plan Into the BodyBuddy App.
What makes a useful coaching handoff
A useful briefing answers three questions quickly:
- What are you trying to do now?
- What has made that easier or harder in real life?
- What should BodyBuddy pick up first?
For example:
Morning movement Last known: Three short strength sessions after school drop-off were sustainable. Workouts planned for 6:00 a.m. were repeatedly skipped. Next: Choose two realistic training days for the coming week.
That gives BodyBuddy something concrete to discuss and follow up on. “Wants to get healthier” does not.
The strongest handoffs usually include:
- specific routines that worked;
- approaches that repeatedly failed;
- constraints that still apply;
- dates for information that can become stale;
- the next unresolved decision; and
- the kind of follow-up you actually respond to.
After onboarding, you can also choose how much BodyBuddy follows up between regular check-ins. See How BodyBuddy Follow-Up Intensity Works.
Frequently asked questions
Does the BodyBuddy app connect to my ChatGPT or Claude account?
No. The transfer happens because you copy a prompt, review the response, and paste selected text into the BodyBuddy app yourself.
The app does not receive your account credentials or gain access to the rest of your conversations.
Will all of my ChatGPT or Claude history transfer?
No. Only the response you paste is transferred.
The source assistant may also have incomplete access to earlier conversations or memory, depending on its settings and current capabilities. Treat its response as a draft, not a complete record.
Do future ChatGPT or Claude conversations sync automatically?
No. This is a one-time handoff. There is no continuous sync in either direction.
Can I import both ChatGPT and Claude?
The onboarding screen supports either source. If both assistants contain genuinely different context, you can review both, but avoid importing the same facts twice. One concise and accurate handoff is usually better than two overlapping summaries.
Can I edit the briefing?
Yes. Edit it before tapping Add. Remove anything private, stale, irrelevant, or uncertain.
Later onboarding screens let you confirm some extracted fields, but they are not a replacement for reviewing the original briefing first.
Can I delete a completed handoff?
The BodyBuddy app does not currently provide a per-handoff delete control.
To request deletion of imported health context, email support@bodybuddy.app. You can also delete your account under Settings → Danger Zone. The Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy explains current retention and deletion timing.
Should I use this for a doctor’s PDF or a trainer’s spreadsheet?
Use Import a file or Paste a plan instead. The ChatGPT and Claude handoff is designed for conversational context, not for replacing a specific source document.
Give BodyBuddy a better starting point
You do not need to transfer every conversation. Bring over the few details that explain what you are working on, what has already failed, what still matters, and where you want help next.
Then let BodyBuddy turn that context into daily text-based coaching and follow-through.
