How BodyBuddy Follow-Up Intensity Works
Choose Chill, Moderate, or Aggressive follow-up in the BodyBuddy app. Follow-up intensity changes extra nudges—not your regular check-in times.

Some people want accountability to show up on schedule and then give them room. Others know what happens when nobody circles back: the planned walk drifts into tomorrow, lunch never gets logged, and “I’ll do it tonight” quietly disappears.
Follow-Up Intensity lets you choose how much BodyBuddy may check on you between your regular check-ins.
The short version
- Chill: your regular check-ins, with no extra intensity-driven follow-ups. This is the default and recommended starting point.
- Moderate: up to one extra follow-up per day when there is a useful reason to send one.
- Aggressive: up to two extra follow-ups per day, with a stronger bias toward circling back when a real commitment is slipping.
Your morning and night check-in times do not move when you change this setting.

Check-ins, follow-ups, and reminders are different
These three kinds of messages can coexist, but they answer different questions.
Message type | What triggers it | Where you control it |
Check-in | Your chosen morning, night, or morning-and-night rhythm | Settings → Communication → Check-in times |
Follow-up | A useful opening between check-ins, grounded in something already happening in your day | Settings → Communication → Follow-ups |
Reminder | A specific one-off or recurring time you asked BodyBuddy to remember | The reminder itself |
A check-in is part of your standing schedule. A follow-up is context-aware and has no fixed daily time. A reminder is clock-based: you asked for a particular message at a particular time or cadence.
BodyBuddy can skip a reminder when recent context shows you already handled it, and pausing proactive messaging stops reminders and follow-ups. Changing Follow-Up Intensity does not create, cancel, or reschedule reminders.
What each Follow-Up Intensity level actually does
Level | Extra follow-ups allowed per day | Best fit |
Chill | 0 | You want the regular check-in rhythm without extra pursuit |
Moderate | Up to 1 | One well-timed second touch can help you follow through |
Aggressive | Up to 2 | You explicitly want more pressure between check-ins |
Chill: regular check-ins, nothing extra
Chill keeps intensity-driven follow-ups at zero. BodyBuddy can still send the morning or night check-ins you selected, along with separately configured reminders and weekly recaps, but it will not add an extra follow-up merely because a commitment is still open.
Chill is the default and the recommended onboarding choice. Start here if extra messages make you pull away, your days are already crowded, or you want to learn the normal coaching rhythm first.
Moderate: up to one useful second touch
Moderate gives BodyBuddy permission to send up to one additional follow-up in a day.
That is a ceiling, not a scheduled daily message. If there is no useful reason to contact you between check-ins, nothing should be sent. Moderate is a sensible fit when a well-timed “still planning that walk?” can help, but you do not want every open thread pursued.
Aggressive: up to two, with more willingness to circle back
Aggressive raises the daily ceiling to up to two additional follow-ups. When a genuine reason exists—a recent promise, an unfinished plan, or a watched area going quiet—it also tells BodyBuddy to lean more toward using the available touch.
It still is not a quota. Aggressive does not justify inventing a new topic, repeating the same point without a meaningful change, or sending a message when silence would be better.
This level can make sense during a training block, a difficult routine reset, or another period when you have deliberately asked for more pressure.
What counts as a useful reason to follow up?
BodyBuddy does not send an extra message simply because a daily slot is available. It looks for a reason grounded in the context you have chosen to share, such as:
- an unresolved action that was planned for today;
- something you recently said you intended to do;
- a coaching question that has been left open for a meaningful amount of time; or
- a moment in food, movement, or sleep that connects to a watched area or active goal.
The distinction matters. If a meal is not logged, BodyBuddy should treat it as unknown, not assume you skipped it. A useful follow-up asks what happened; it does not manufacture a failure.
The system also keeps distance from moments when another message would be intrusive. Follow-ups are blocked or delayed when:
- you are actively talking with BodyBuddy;
- a recent coach message is still waiting for your reply;
- a regular check-in is coming soon;
- you are outside your waking hours; or
- you paused proactive messages.
A later bedtime you explicitly planned for that night can extend the normal waking window, but only until that stated bedtime.
The maximum is permission, not a promise
“Up to one” and “up to two” are the most important words in this feature.
A daily maximum answers how many extra touches are allowed. It does not promise that BodyBuddy will use every one. The decision still depends on whether there is a concrete topic, whether the timing makes sense, and whether another message is likely to help rather than pester.
That means a quiet day on Aggressive is not necessarily a malfunction. It may mean there was no grounded reason to interrupt you between check-ins.
How to choose the level that will actually help
The strongest setting is not the setting with the most messages. It is the one you will still engage with next week.
Choose Chill if:
- another message tends to make you avoid the conversation;
- your regular check-ins already provide enough structure; or
- you want fewer notifications during a busy or low-capacity period.
Choose Moderate if:
- you benefit from one well-timed nudge on a real commitment;
- you want more follow-through without feeling watched all day; or
- you are unsure and want to test extra accountability gradually.
Choose Aggressive if:
- you regularly ask people to “stay on me about this”;
- you want BodyBuddy to come back when a concrete commitment starts slipping; and
- you are comfortable receiving more than one extra touch on a day with multiple real hooks.
You can change the level with the season. Turn it down during travel, illness, or an overloaded week. Turn it up temporarily when you want a deliberate push.
How to change Follow-Up Intensity
The setting is available in the BodyBuddy app on iPhone and the web:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Communication.
- Open Follow-ups.
- Select Chill, Moderate, or Aggressive.
Your selection saves when you tap or click it; there is no separate Save button.
New users also choose a level during onboarding. Chill starts selected and is marked Recommended. You can revise that choice at any time.
You can also tell BodyBuddy in conversation that you want more or less follow-through—for example, “be more chill” or “stay on me about this”—and it can update the preference for you.
What this setting does not change
Follow-Up Intensity is intentionally narrow. It does not change:
- your morning or night check-in windows;
- the timing or recurrence of reminders;
- whether weekly recaps are enabled;
- which basics—food, movement, or sleep—you asked BodyBuddy to watch; or
- the separate control that pauses all proactive messaging.
Those controls remain independent so you can tune when BodyBuddy checks in, what it watches, and how hard it follows up without treating them as one giant notification switch.
Know the boundary: Follow-Up Intensity controls ordinary coaching messages. It is not emergency monitoring, medication surveillance, symptom triage, or confirmation that a medical instruction was completed. Contact the appropriate professional or emergency service when a situation needs clinical or urgent attention.
Frequently asked questions
Does Moderate always send one extra follow-up?
No. Moderate permits up to one. BodyBuddy may send none when there is no grounded, well-timed reason to contact you.
Does Aggressive guarantee two messages?
No. It permits up to two and makes BodyBuddy more willing to use them when real hooks exist. It does not turn two messages into a daily quota.
Will changing intensity move my check-in times?
No. Check-in times live under Settings → Communication → Check-in times and remain unchanged.
Is a follow-up the same as a reminder?
No. A follow-up is context-aware and can happen between regular check-ins. A reminder is tied to a specific time or recurrence you requested.
Can I turn extra follow-ups off?
Yes. Select Chill. If you want to stop all proactive BodyBuddy messages—including check-ins and reminders—use the separate messaging pause.
