MyChart Emmie vs BodyBuddy: Portal AI or Daily Health Coach?
Disclosure: The creators of BodyBuddy publish this comparison. We reviewed official Epic, MyChart, Reid Health, and Rush sources on August 28, 2026. Emmie is still rolling out, so its availability and features can vary by health system.
MyChart Emmie and BodyBuddy both use AI to make health easier to manage. They solve different parts of the problem.
Choose MyChart Emmie when you need help inside a participating health system: finding test results, understanding a visit note, managing a bill, scheduling care, or deciding what kind of care to seek.
Choose BodyBuddy when you need help carrying approved instructions into daily life: bringing together plans from different professionals, reviewing what was imported, and getting proactive follow-up by text.
For many people, the best answer may be both. Emmie can make a health system easier to navigate. BodyBuddy can help the plan survive after you leave it.

What MyChart Emmie actually does

Emmie is Epic's patient-facing AI assistant for MyChart. It is not one identical product everywhere. Each health system can introduce supported features over time.
Reid Health's current Emmie page describes a broad set of portal-native tasks. Patients can search test results, visit notes, past appointments, care-team messages, and imaging results. Eligible patients can ask questions based on their record, manage appointments by text, get help with billing, and use a symptom-checking workflow that may suggest self-care or an appropriate level of care.
At Rush, MyChart reports that Emmie has handled more than 3,000 billing conversations and reduced billing customer-service messages by 50 percent. That is a concrete example of where portal AI can remove real administrative friction.
Emmie's biggest advantage is authority inside the portal. When it surfaces a result, bill, appointment, or note, it is working close to the source of that information.
MyChart’s announcement of upcoming Emmie wellness plans and wearable-linked progress tracking.
This announcement moves Emmie closer to ongoing health support, not just portal navigation. The distinction is still meaningful: Epic shows structured wellness plans inside MyChart, while BodyBuddy is designed to carry plans from across a person's health life into proactive daily coaching by text.
The public discussion around Epic's launch is useful. Clinicians and patients asked whether an assistant can work across several MyChart accounts, what records it can see, how readable its answers are, and how health systems will measure trust and adoption. Those questions do not prove a defect. They reveal the natural boundary of a portal assistant: its usefulness depends on the system, records, and workflows connected to it.

What BodyBuddy actually does

BodyBuddy is a health accountability coach. You talk to BodyBuddy by text message, and BodyBuddy can reach out first.
You can bring in a doctor's after-visit summary, a physical therapy program, a dietitian's meal plan, a therapist's written exercises, a trainer's workout plan, or another health plan you already trust. BodyBuddy organizes the instructions and asks you to review them before they become part of your plan.
You can also record a visit with permission. If you prefer the Voice Memos app, you can record there and send the audio to BodyBuddy by text. The same review step applies before extracted instructions become part of a plan.
The next day is where the product becomes different. BodyBuddy follows up through ordinary text messages. It can ask how the first dose went, remind you about the exercise your physical therapist assigned, help you plan a meal around your dietitian's targets, or check whether you booked the follow-up your doctor requested.

BodyBuddy also keeps daily context in one place. Meals, calories, protein, weight, movement, and sleep can become part of the same coaching conversation. This makes the plan easier to fit around the rest of your health instead of treating every instruction as a separate task.
BodyBuddy is not medical care. It does not replace a doctor, therapist, physical therapist, dietitian, or other qualified professional. Its job is to help you understand, organize, and follow the plans you have reviewed.

The most important difference is where each product has authority

Emmie has direct authority inside a participating health system's MyChart environment. It is the better fit when the task depends on the portal itself.
BodyBuddy operates on authority you provide. You choose the notes, recordings, documents, and plans to bring in. You review the result. BodyBuddy then helps execute that plan through daily coaching.
That distinction matters:
  • Use Emmie to find the lab result, understand the note, schedule care, or resolve a supported billing task.
  • Use BodyBuddy to carry the approved next steps across the days and weeks that follow.
One product is close to the health system. The other stays close to the person.

Emmie is stronger for health-system navigation

Choose Emmie when your main problem is inside MyChart.
It can be the better experience for:
  • locating information in a long medical record;
  • translating supported results and notes into plainer language;
  • scheduling or rescheduling with a participating organization;
  • getting help with a bill or payment plan;
  • preparing for a visit using the context already held by the system;
  • finding the right next portal action.
This is valuable because health portals are often dense. The correct information may already exist, but finding it can require several menus, messages, and phone calls.

BodyBuddy is stronger for daily behavior change

Choose BodyBuddy when the hard part begins after you receive the instructions.
BodyBuddy offers the better user experience for behavior change because the plan becomes part of a continuing relationship. You do not need to remember to open another portal and reconstruct what happened. BodyBuddy can follow up in the same text thread where you already talk about meals, movement, sleep, symptoms, appointments, and the rest of your health.
It is especially useful when:
  • several professionals are involved in your care;
  • the plan came from outside one health system;
  • you understand the advice but struggle to carry it into a busy week;
  • you need the plan translated into small next steps;
  • you want accountability without managing another checklist;
  • your nutrition, sleep, activity, and appointments affect one another.
The goal is relief from the mental burden of carrying your entire health alone.

BodyBuddy works across your health life

Emmie is designed around MyChart and the health system offering it. BodyBuddy is designed around the person.
That means BodyBuddy can work with instructions from a primary care doctor, specialist, therapist, physical therapist, dietitian, dentist, health coach, or trainer. It can also work with a plan you created for yourself.
This does not make BodyBuddy a source of medical authority. It makes BodyBuddy a consistent execution layer across sources of authority.
That distinction is particularly useful for people whose health does not fit neatly inside one portal.

Can you use MyChart Emmie and BodyBuddy together?

Yes. The products can complement each other.
  1. Use Emmie to find the relevant result, note, bill, or appointment inside MyChart.
  1. Review the next steps with the professional responsible for your care.
  1. Bring the approved instructions into BodyBuddy.
  1. Review the plan BodyBuddy creates.
  1. Let BodyBuddy follow up by text as the plan meets real life.
This is a cleaner division of labor than asking either product to do everything.

Which one should you choose?

Choose MyChart Emmie if:
  • your health system offers it;
  • the task depends on information or actions inside MyChart;
  • you need help with records, scheduling, billing, or supported symptom routing;
  • you want an assistant connected closely to your provider organization.
Choose BodyBuddy if:
  • you want proactive daily health accountability by text;
  • your instructions come from more than one professional or system;
  • you want approved plans integrated with meals, nutrition, weight, movement, and sleep;
  • you need help following through between appointments.
Use both if:
  • you want MyChart to be easier to navigate and your plan to be easier to live with.
