BodyBuddy vs Practice Better (2026): Following Your Health Coach's Plan Between Sessions

Practice Better is your coach's free client portal. BodyBuddy texts you daily to follow any coach's plan between sessions. Prices, privacy, who wins.

BodyBuddy vs Practice Better (2026): Following Your Health Coach's Plan Between Sessions
Disclosure: This comparison is published by the creators of BodyBuddy. We read Practice Better's pages, help center, app store listings, and privacy policy on October 14, 2026.
The short answer: choose Practice Better if your health coach, dietitian, or nutritionist already runs their practice on it, because the client portal is free for you, holds the protocol your coach wrote, and is where they read your journal and answer your messages. Choose BodyBuddy if the hard part is the six days between sessions, because it takes the plan your coach gave you (from any portal, PDF, or screenshot), texts you every day to help you follow it, and checks in when you go quiet. If your coach uses Practice Better, the two stack: the portal is the record, BodyBuddy is the daily follow-through.
Neither product replaces your coach. Practice Better is a tool your coach buys to run their practice, and BodyBuddy is an AI coach with no humans behind the chat. The useful question is what happens after the session ends and you are holding a plan.

The real difference: the coach's office vs the client's week

Practice Better is a platform the practitioner buys. The homepage calls it "the all-in-one practice management software," names health coaches, dietitians, nutritionists, and personal trainers among its audience, and says more than 50,000 practitioners use it. Scheduling, charting, billing, telehealth, protocols, and messaging live in one account that belongs to your coach. The client portal is the part of that account you can see.
The help center's portal guide walks through the client dashboard: upcoming sessions, forms, session notes, protocols, programs, invoices, a Messenger window to your practitioner, and two journals. Your coach shares a protocol and you get a notification. You log meals and sleep, and your coach can comment. None of it exists for you unless your practitioner is a Practice Better customer and has invited you.
BodyBuddy starts from the other end. You bought it, so it works with whatever your coach gave you: a protocol exported from Practice Better, a PDF from a different portal, or a photo of the handout. You upload it, it becomes a daily plan, and BodyBuddy texts you each day over iMessage about what is on for the day. When a workout is on the plan, it asks how it went. When a few days pass with no reply, it checks in without a lecture. The health coach page puts it in one line: your coach sets the plan, BodyBuddy runs the week.
The two products disagree about where the plan should live. Practice Better keeps it in the coach's system, where it stays accurate and the coach can see your compliance. BodyBuddy keeps a working copy in a text thread you already open forty times a day. The portal is the record. The text thread is present on a Wednesday night when you are deciding whether the protocol allows rice.

Where Practice Better is better

1. It is your coach's own system

The protocol in Practice Better is the one your coach wrote, with the session notes attached. The protocols page describes food, supplement, and lifestyle recommendations with the what, why, and how for each, plus a supplement chart that can link to an online dispensary. When your coach changes something, they publish an updated version to your portal. BodyBuddy works from the copy you uploaded, so a changed protocol means a new upload.

2. Your coach reads the journal and answers in the same place

The onboarding guide for practitioners says your coach can review journal entries and "add comments directly to journal entries." A dietitian quoted on the journaling page comments daily on food journals. Your coach can also assign tasks, set them to recur, and see when you mark them done. That is a human reading your actual week, which BodyBuddy cannot offer.

3. It is free for you and runs on Android

The client app is free on the App Store and Google Play, and the portal "is included in every Practice Better plan at no additional cost." BodyBuddy costs $29 per month and runs over iMessage, so it needs an iPhone.

4. The journal is deeper and talks to more wearables

The Food and Mood Journal searches a nutrition database, accepts meal photos and custom recipes, and records how you felt before and after eating, according to the portal guide. The Lifestyle Journal covers activity, measurements, vitals, mood, and sleep, and the journaling page lists Garmin, Oura, Apple Health, and Fitbit. BodyBuddy logs meals from a photo and pulls steps, workouts, sleep, and weight from Apple Health, a narrower set.

Where BodyBuddy is better

1. It texts you first, every day

Practice Better's notifications are tied to events. The General FAQ lists what clients receive: appointment reminders, tasks, shared notes and protocols, journal comments, forms, invoices, chat messages, and program notifications. Each one arrives because your coach did something. As far as their public pages show, nothing in the portal asks about lunch on a quiet Tuesday unless your coach scheduled that message ahead of time. BodyBuddy does, as a partner would: "we'll get this in every day."

2. It works with any coach's plan, from any software

Many health coaches use other software, and plenty hand over a Google Doc, a Canva PDF, or a text message. BodyBuddy takes a photo or PDF of any plan and turns it into a daily schedule; the import guide shows how. A Practice Better protocol works the same way: screenshot it and upload.

3. It answers questions from your own sheet at 9 pm

Messaging in Practice Better reaches your coach, who replies on their schedule, which is the right answer for anything clinical. For "does my protocol allow oats on a training day," BodyBuddy reads the plan you uploaded and answers now, staying inside what your coach wrote. BodyBuddy is not medical care and does not replace your health coach, dietitian, or clinician.

4. The session becomes next week's plan

With everyone's okay, you can record your check-in with your coach in the BodyBuddy app, or send a Voice Memos recording. BodyBuddy summarizes the session, pulls out the new targets, and folds them into the week's texts. Practice Better's session notes are written by the practitioner and shared when they choose, which is useful as a record and slower as a plan.

Pricing: Practice Better is free for clients, BodyBuddy is $29 a month

Practice Better charges the practitioner. As of October 2026, the pricing page lists a free Sprout plan for students with up to 3 clients, Starter at $35 per month (10 clients), Professional at $69 (300 clients), Plus at $99 (unlimited), and Team at $155, with annual billing $10 a month cheaper on every paid tier. The client app and portal cost you nothing.
BodyBuddy is $29 per month after a 7-day free trial, per the pricing section at bodybuddy.app. If the portal plus your coach's comments keeps you on plan, spend nothing. Pay for BodyBuddy when the gap between sessions is where the plan falls apart.

Privacy and who holds your data

Your Practice Better data lives in your practitioner's chart for you. The help center's security article says data is encrypted in transit and at rest, stored on servers in the United States, and that a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement is available to practitioners. The public privacy policy is dated March 26, 2019, covers the practicebetter.io website, and says EU residents can access, update, or request deletion of personal data in your account settings or by contacting the company. It does not mention HIPAA or AI, and the help center describes client-initiated account deletion as a setting the practitioner must turn on.
BodyBuddy's privacy policy, updated October 7, 2026, says it does not sell personal information, that third-party AI providers process your messages and photos to deliver coaching, that appointment recordings are never used to train AI models, and that data leaves active systems within 30 days of deleting your account.
On recording: BodyBuddy asks you to get everyone's okay before recording a session, and consent rules vary by state and country, so tell your coach first. Practice Better's public pages do not describe client-side recording of telehealth sessions, so ask your practitioner.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Practice Better if:
  • Your coach already uses it; the portal is free and holds your protocol, notes, and invoices.
  • You want your coach, a human, reading your journal and commenting on it.
  • You use Android or prefer a web portal to a text thread.
  • Your protocol includes supplements ordered through your coach's dispensary.
Choose BodyBuddy if:
  • Your coach handed you a PDF, a doc, or a screenshot and you need help following it every day.
  • The plan goes well for two days after each session and then fades.
  • You want a text each day and a check-in when you go quiet.
  • You record check-ins and want the adjustments to become next week's plan.
If your coach is on Practice Better and you still lose the thread midweek, use both. For the clinical version of this question, see BodyBuddy vs AlignCare.

Frequently asked questions

Which app helps me follow my health coach's plan between sessions?

Practice Better's client portal holds the plan if your coach uses Practice Better, and notifies you when your coach shares, assigns, or comments on something. BodyBuddy takes the plan from any coach and texts you every day to help you follow it. Use the portal for the record and BodyBuddy for the daily follow-through.

Can I use Practice Better without my coach?

No. The client portal and app exist inside a practitioner's account, and you get in by invitation. If your coach uses different software, there is nothing for you to sign up for.

Does Practice Better work on Android?

Yes. The client app is free on Google Play and the App Store, and the portal works in any browser. BodyBuddy's daily coaching runs over iMessage, and its app is iPhone-only.

Can BodyBuddy read a protocol from Practice Better?

Yes. Screenshot or export the protocol from the portal and upload it in the BodyBuddy app. It becomes a daily plan, and BodyBuddy answers questions from that sheet. When your coach updates the protocol, upload the new version.

Does Practice Better send daily reminders to clients?

As far as its public pages show, clients get notifications for appointments, assigned tasks, shared protocols and notes, journal comments, messages, and program modules. Practitioners can set tasks to recur and, on Plus and Team plans, schedule chat messages ahead of time. The daily coaching text is BodyBuddy's job.

Is BodyBuddy a real coach?

No. BodyBuddy is an AI with no humans behind the chat. It follows the plan your coach wrote and helps you stick to it, and it does not replace your health coach, dietitian, or clinician.
